Neither test is easier for everyone. The right question is: which format suits your strengths? Here is how IELTS and PTE Academic differ, so you can decide with confidence.
The main differences
| IELTS | PTE Academic | |
|---|---|---|
| Speaking test | Face-to-face interview with an examiner | Speak into a microphone; answers are scored by software |
| Marking | Trained human examiners | Automated scoring |
| Delivery | Paper-based or computer-delivered | Computer only |
| Score scale | Bands 0 to 9 | 10 to 90 |
| Task style | Separate tasks per skill (for example a Task 2 essay) | Many short, integrated tasks (for example Describe Image, Repeat Sentence) |
Choose IELTS if…
- You are more comfortable speaking to a person than a computer
- You prefer longer, structured writing tasks
- Your university or visa category specifically asks for IELTS
Choose PTE if…
- You are comfortable typing and working on a screen
- You like quick, varied tasks and consistent automated marking
- Your target institution or visa category accepts PTE Academic
Check acceptance first
Before you book anything, confirm which tests your university or immigration authority currently accepts and the score they require. Requirements change, and the right test is the one your application accepts.
